Charles Lyell
Charles Lyell helped influence Darwin by coming up with theories on how the earth, or more specifically the Earths crust changed over time rather than by rapid large events. This further lead to Darwin being inspired by him and seeing how changes occur in nature overtime to adapt to the changes in the surrounding environment. I do think Charles Darwin needed Charles Lyell's work to help further his ideas on natural selection in fact it seems Darwin was very heavily influenced by Lyell. It took Darwin 23 years to publish his work as he knew it would be great risk to his career.

That was very short. These assignments are to be treated like papers, not tweets, with each prompt fully addressed and points clearly described. I'll review what you have here, but please adjust your approach here for the next assignment. Expand. Show me what you know and try to teach me something.
ReplyDeleteWhat was the key contribution of Lyell to Darwin's mechanism? Can you describe how Uniformitarianism worked? Did it have any parallels to natural selection? And how did it help Darwin with regard to the concept of "deep time" by explaining that the earth was actually much older than originally thought?
I don't see where you address the next section. You needed to select a bullet point (or more than one) from the guidelines that can be best attributed to Lyell.
Yes, I agree that Darwin was heavily influenced by Lyell. What evidence do you have for that?
"It took Darwin 23 years to publish his work as he knew it would be great risk to his career."
That is a statement that needs to be explained. Why did he suspect this to be the case? What were Darwin's concerns? Could he have been negatively impacted, either socially or professionally? And was he only worried about himself or was he also worried about how his family might be impacted by publishing? Remember that his wife was very devout. How might she have been impacted if the church responded negatively to Darwin? Remember that scientists don't work in a vacuum. They can be influenced not just by academics but also by social, cultural and personal issues.
Hello,
ReplyDeleteI do believe your arguement with Lyell being one of the positive influences on Darwin. Also I think without having all these group of people combined with ideas and expierences, Darwin wouldn't be able to further his ideas with natural selection. I woul've wished for this arguemet to be more detailed with facts on how the attitude of the church affected his decisions on publishing his theory. Lastly, I think your point should've been more clarified to understand why this was a positive affect for Darwin.
